Modcloth’s Uniquely You Campaign

I was contacted by the favorite online store Modcloth to participate in their Uniquely You Campaign where I was challenged to style a chosen article of clothing, the Evening of Extravagance Dress, to fit my personal style.

Evening of Extravagance Dress (1)

I mean, the dress itself is perfectly me from the knee-length skirt with a tulle underlay to this sassy bit of lace peeking at the bust. So how would I style it? Easy: gold and pearls.

ModCloth's Uniquely You Campaign

I love to get glam and liven up LDBs (little black dresses) so that every accessory will stand out from the black color. Either a black shoe with a fun detail to it or a glamorous shoe will work; it’s usually up to how fabulous I’m feeling for the evening occasion. Additionally, I can never help myself to incorporate some color into every outfit, so peep it in the refreshingly minty clutch in this one! Isn’t this look so Audrey Hepburn classic LDB with a twist?

Living My Life Like It’s Pinterest: A Fashionable New Year’s Resolution

As the new year rolls around, many people across the world are hopeful for fresh starts and the possibility of new opportunities. Gyms will be packed come January 1st for those inspired to get fit, burgers will be abandoned for salads by those trying to eat healthier, and cigarette packs will remain unsought by those determined to quit smoking. As for me, I want my life to reflect my Pinterest boards.

I’m sure my fellow Pinterest fanatics may think I’m setting myself up for instant failure with the vision board-like website hosting so many enticing images that seem nearly impossible to aspire to, but hear me out! I have a few inspiration boards that I can apply to my everyday life without breaking the bank.

Style Inspiration

Style Inspiration

While perusing through my Style Inspiration board, I noticed a lot of my pins have a common thread: skirts and dresses. From midi circle skirts to lace fit and flare dresses, my subconsciousness is telling me to bare my legs. And so in 2014 I shall! I’ve admittedly reached for jeans on so many occasions because it’s safer (and faster) than trying to coordinate an outfit out of the skirts and dresses in my closet. That’s mainly because I’m so self-conscious about falling victim to the skirt-flying-up-and-not-being-able-to-look-cute-catching-yourself-like-Marilyn-Monroe effect. I’ve created a few outfit ideas on Polyvore with skirts and dresses that are cute and comfortable AND I won’t have to worrying about skirt lengths vs wind duels.

Wintertime Burgundy
With burgundy being my favorite color for the winter, this dress would be perfect for those ocassionally chilly days.
  Girly with Edge

This leather skirt combo would be perfect for winter in LA, plus the pop of cobalt blue brightens the outfit.

Words of Inspiration

Words of Inspiration

While skimming my Words of Inspiration board, one particular pin jumps out at me. “You must do more than just reflect on words of inspiration you must also live by them.” Deep, right? So I vow to practice what I’m pinning and apply the lessons of positivity, courage, creativity, and happiness in light of what the upcoming year has in store for me. It may not be as simple as that, but it will take persistent practice. What’s to lose in 2014?

Visual Inspiration

Visual Inspiration

My Visual Inspiration board is for things that catch my eye and inspire my creativity. My initial intent for this board was to get enough inspiration to actually do my interpretation of these images, whether it be through photography, graphic design, or hand sketching. However, school and work took up most of my 2013. This next year, I plan on dedicating a lot more time to flex my creativity muscles and expand my portfolio on my own. I think it’s important for people in the creative industries, especially fashion, to find time outside of their paying gigs and delve into projects on the side that they enjoy doing, thus not forgetting the little things that sparked our passion to pursue our career paths in the first place. Granted, if you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work, but some of us younger folks aren’t at that point in our journeys yet. So in the meantime in between time, I shall be pulling images from my board and seeing where my creativity takes me. Who knows, maybe I’ll do a blog post series on it!

Happy New Year readers and cheers to a fresh start! What are your resolutions for 2014?

These Tom Ford booties screamed out “alluring, sultry, feisty, baroque,” and the four dress options would pair perfect with them. Beyonce’s temptress make-up from her Haunted video works with any option plus the burgundy nails to match the lips.

Bridal Fashion Week: The Faves and the Trends

While everyone usually obsesses over the fashion shows held in the fashion capitals of the world for ready-to-wear, I’m drooling over Bridal Fashion Week, AKA Bridal Market, a weekend of  runway shows from the top designers of the bridal industry combined with a trade show for buyers across the country. This semi-annual occasion is always held in New York around February and October for the spring and fall collections, respectively. The Knot, my favorite bridal magazine, always streams the weekend of runway shows live from their website, so if you’re as wild about wedding dresses as I am, be sure to catch the live coverage next season!

As for this Bridal Market, here are my overall favorites, in no particular order:

This Lazaro ball gown from their Spring 2014 line is to die for! I’m always a sucker for voluptuous tulle and a sweetheart neckline and the ribbon detailing at the hems of the tulle is an unique added touch.

If you love exquisite detailing and a romantic feel in your gown like I do, Monique Lhuillier is definitely your go-to girl. She never ceases to amaze me with her intricate beadwork and “Violet” from her Fall 2014 line is no exception.

The placement of lace throughout this D.I.D. gown from their Spring 2014 collection is very gentle, unique, and figure flattering. I love how the lace panels give a billowy trumpet effect to the gown!

The Spring 2014 collection from Ines Di Santo brought some gorgeous pieces to the runway, but this one took the cake for me. I usually prefer a nice strapless dress, but this mermaid dress makes wearing sleeves look fabulous!

It was so difficult for me to pick just one favorite from Amsale’s Spring 2014 collection, but I love the choice of lace she used in this one shoulder dress. It’s absolutely impeccable in true Amsale fashion!

Apart from my favorites of the season, here are the top three trends to do a mad dash for:

Bling Bling

Bridal Market Bling Dress TrendIt’s time for the bride to truly shine! Brands like Lazaro (l) and Sottero & Midgley (c) opted for a more bolder statement of the trend whereas Badgley Mischka (r) took a more subtle approach.

Mini Florals

Bridal Market Mini Floral Trend3-D mini floral detailing adds an artistic feel to a wedding gown. Marc Zunino (r) uses mini florals to add that extra pop to an already perfectly sculpted gown. I also love the fading effect Jorge Manuel (l) and Temperley (c) chose to use on these gowns. It reminds me of an ombre effect!

Short Dresses

Bridal Market Short Dress TrendDare to show some leg, brides? Well Jenny Lee, Hayley Paige, and Carolina Herrera have the spunky short dresses you’ve been dying for.

Afterthoughts of the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Collection + Outfit of the Yesterday

When Target collaborations go really right, fashionistas go really insane for them. The Phillip Lim for Target collection, which debuted September 15th, was no exception, as I’m sure you’ve already heard or personally witnessed. While it seems that the hype has died down once the highly coveted items reached their rightful owners, I was expecting to see a big boom of style bloggers posting Outfit of the Day looks highlighting the collection apparel. My search for these posts brought some interesting finds.

First, there wasn’t a wide variety of purchase choices. The majority of fashion bloggers bought and styled the Boom sweatshirt and I rarely saw others venture out and cover anything else. Second, some pieces from the collection, like the powerline print dress and sparkle blouse, didn’t even make it to a single blog post. I’m curious to know if it was because the items didn’t appeal to the masses or that nobody thought outside the box to see the styling potential in them. Third, there were an amazing amount of giveaways, especially for the purses! Those bags, just like the whole Missoni for Target collection way back when, were poached by people looking to make a profit from selling them on eBay. Women have been dying to get their hands on even the mini satchel, and what better strategic move for a blogger than to set up a giveaway and drive traffic to their blog? Most of the giveaways are long over, but is still taking entries to win the crossbody bag until the 19th!

While perusing the internet, I came across some fashion blogger’s style posts that I absolutely adored! Check out my favorites below:

Yesterday, I decided to wear my own Phillip Lim for Target find, the shirt dress long-sleeved blouse. Since the LA temps have shot back up in the upper 80’s, I wore it with shorts. I’m rarely a shorts type of person, but to me the length of the shirt looked a lot better on me if I showed some skin. I also paired it with some wedge booties and a burgundy tote as a way of saying, “Yeah, it may be hot out, but it’s still fall!”

Did you purchase and wear anything from the  Phillip Lim for Target collection, and how did you style it? What do you think about Target/designer collabs? Chime in in the comments section!

Intro/Back to Business

Hello readers! I’m Jasmyn and welcome to my fashion and lifestyle blog!

A little personal background about me: I’m 23, born and raised in Chicago, and currently living in LA and attending FIDM. For a more in-depth look into who I really am, check out my bio. I’ve created this blog as a creative outlet where I can explore and discuss fashion news and trends, personal style and branding, and wardrobe tips along with the everyday happenings of my life as a young adult making the workplace transition from intern to full-time employee.

School starts back up for me today, and it’ll be my last quarter (hallelujah!), so I’m all about getting out of my break laziness and back to business. Although it’s been a pretty mild two weeks, there were some highlights.

To celebrate the end of the quarter, my friends and I went to Six Flags Magic Mountain. It was exciting and interesting for me to compare Magic Mountain to the Six Flags Great America from back home. I was super pumped there was the Batman ride because it was my favorite. Unfortunately, the line was way too long and it was way too hot. But since we didn’t have enough time to ride the Batman, I got what was twice as nice: a funnel cake sundae. Yummy!

I was also able to meet my idol David Tutera at Redbook Magazine’s Studio Red event! I am an aspiring wedding planner, and it’s truly because of watching his shows on WeTV, especially David Tutera: Unveiled. He’s very strict and professional, not to mention a creative genius, yet he still is a very tender person. And I’m definitely framing his autograph!

I also went thrifting for the first time! I was in the Glendale area this Tuesday doing a playtest for Disney and saw a thrift store in walking distance. I found two tops and a pashmina scarf. The tops were $7.99 each and the scarf was $5.99. Talk about a steal!

For the blue patterned top, I’d probably have to go all DIY on it because I want to get rid of the gathered bottom so that it fits looser. But let me get on to the black and white print top. I’m slightly obsessed with chevron patterned things so my eye instantly gravitated towards it. While admiring the top, the label caught my eye and they almost bulged out their sockets. Self, did that say “Missoni for Target”?!!? Why yes it did!

Of course I snatched it up with a quickness and tried my best not to act too suspicious about finding this gem in the thrift store. I also saw another shirt from the collection, but it unfortunately wasn’t my style. I couldn’t believe how lucky I got with this find. First the Diane von Furstenberg yoga mat from the Holiday24 collection that I found in Ross, now this! I guess sometimes being a late bloomer has its perks.

I was so elated about this find that I decided to wear this for my first-day-of-school outfit. Going back-to-school shopping and the first-day-of-school outfit were a big deal for me growing up, and I still try to stay true to that and put on my best dressed early in the school year (because we all know, once finals come around, fashion goes out the window).

And here’s a look I created inspired by my back-to-school outfit! Metallic is a bold trend to try out for the fall, and a bag is a great starting point to incorporate it into your wardrobe since it complements your jewelry well. And who can resist wearing some orange during pumpkin season?
